Abstract Recent advances in the field of complex, transiently chaotic dynamics are reviewed, based on results published focus issue J. Phys. Complex. this topic. One group achievements concerns network where transient features intimately related to degree and stability synchronization, as well topology. A plethora various applications chaos described, ranging from collective motion active particles, through operation power grids, cardiac arrhythmias, magnetohydrodynamical dynamos, use machine learning predict time evolutions. Nontraditional forms also explored, such temporal change chaoticity transients (called doubly chaos), systems subjected parameter drift, paradigm which is climate change.
